Behavioural Coaching

Behavioural coaching is a structured coaching approach that focuses on identifying, modifying, and reinforcing specific behaviours to improve personal or professional performance.

What is Behavioural Coaching?

It is based on principles from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioural science, helping individuals develop habits that lead to success. It takes into account what our current behaviour are, how we show up, what impact we have on others and what drives our behaviours.

Awareness of and knowing ourselves a little better, allows us to make choices to change, based on how we want to be, show up and impact our relationships for good.

Difference from other coaching approaches

Unlike traditional coaching, which may focus on broad goals, behavioural coaching is action-oriented, measurable, and science-backed. It emphasizes observable behaviours rather than abstract skills or knowledge.

Key principles of Behavioural Coaching

  • Behavioural Analysis – Identifies current habits, patterns, and triggers.

  • Goal Setting – Establishes clear, measurable behavioural objectives.

  • Reinforcement & Feedback – Uses positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to encourage change.

  • Cognitive Restructuring – Helps individuals reframe limiting beliefs and adopt a growth mindset.

  • Accountability & Measurement – Tracks progress with accountability and support  mechanisms to ensure sustainable change.

Harvard Business review

“Today, coaching is a popular and potent solution for ensuring top performance from an organization’s most critical talent.

There’s no question that future leaders will need constant coaching.  As the business environment becomes more complex, they will increasingly turn to coaches for help in understanding how to act.

Coaches will do more than influence behaviors; they will be an essential part of the leader’s learning process, providing knowledge, opinions, and judgment in critical areas.

Over time the coaching focus shifts from what the coaches were originally hired to do.  It starts out with a business bias and inevitably migrates to ‘bigger issues’ such as life purpose, work/life balance, and becoming a better leader.

As coaching has become more common, any stigma attached to receiving it at the individual level has disappeared. Now, it is often considered a badge of honor”.
